THE Department of Meteorology and Hydrology announced on the afternoon of 28 September that a well-marked low-pressure area over the northern Andaman Sea moved north-northwestwards, intensified, and reached the level of a depression.
Due to this depression, continuous rains caused flooding and landslides across Launglon, Dawei, and Thayetchaung townships in Taninthayi Region. More than 40 villages are currently submerged.
Some rescue workers stated that around 10 residents have died and nearly 20 remain missing. However, the exact data cannot yet be independently verified due to power outages, phone line disruptions, and damaged transport routes. Because rescue resources are limited, operations are prioritizing the evacuation of trapped flood victims to safe areas.
Residents estimate that tens of thousands of people may be affected by the floods. According to statements from relevant officials, 8,431 flood victims from four wards in Launglon have been relocated and sheltered at Pan Taw Wa Monastery. Additionally, parts of the Myeik-Dawei highway in Thayetchaung are flooded, while paddy fields in numerous villages have suffered extensive damage.
The DMH has warned that heavy rain, lightning, and hail may occur, advising high caution regarding mountain torrents, flash floods, and landslides. — TWA/ZN
