Blue lights were lit yesterday evening at the offices of the Department of Marine Administration, Myanma Port Authority, Inland Water Transport, Myanmar Maritime University, Myanmar Mercantile Marine College, Myanmar Five Star Line, and at international jetties and vessels in Yangon to mark World Maritime Day.
World Maritime Day is observed annually on the last Thursday of September worldwide. The 2026 World Maritime Day ceremony was held yesterday morning at Wyndham Grand Yangon Hotel in Yangon.
At the ceremony, Deputy Minister for Transport U Htun Lu presented awards to three Seafarer Recruitment and Placement Services (SRPS) companies that provided the highest number of job opportunities for Myanmar seafarers in 2025.
He said the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence” as the theme for World Maritime Day in 2026 and 2027. The theme highlights the maritime sector’s contribution to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through expanded trade, improved connectivity, decent job creation and protection of the marine environment.
Director-General of the Department of Marine Administration Dr Ko Ko Naing also outlined future activities to be carried out in line with the 2026 theme.
The ceremony also included discussions on digital transformation in the maritime sector, a workshop on Collective Bargaining Agreements for coastal vessels, and measures to expand employment opportunities for seafarers. — MNA/KTZH
