A renovated inscription hall at the Mahamuni Buddha Image compound in Mandalay was reopened yesterday following restoration funded by the Government of Nepal with a US$300,000 donation.
The opening ceremony was attended by Union Minister for Religious Affairs U Tin Oo Lwin, Nepali Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Harishchandra Ghimire, Mandalay Region Chief Minister U Myo Aung and other officials, along with members of Myanmar’s Gurkha community and the Mahamuni Buddha Image Board of Trustees.
The hall was damaged in the Mandalay earthquake. Demolition began on 6 January 2026, and restoration was carried out jointly by the Board of Trustees and the Gurkha community after Nepal provided the donation on 14 February.
At the ceremony, the Union minister expressed gratitude to the Government of Nepal and those involved in the restoration, saying that Myanmar and Nepal would continue to strengthen cooperation in religious affairs.
Following speeches and cultural performances, officials formally reopened the hall and inspected a commemorative stone inscription in three languages.
They later inspected restoration works at earthquake-damaged Sudhamma rest houses north of the Mandalay Palace moat and at religious buildings and inscription halls at Maha Lawka Marazein Kuthodaw Pagoda in Aungmyaythazan Township. — MNA/KZL
