Flood prevention and protection works are continuing in six townships in Ayeyawady Region following erosion of the Nyaungdonkyun embankment along a branch of the Ayeyawady River and a breach beneath the Ngawun River embankment.
At a site near Ganchaung Village in Nyaungdon Township, a section of the Nyaungdon-Kyunta embankment measuring about 300 feet long and 45 feet wide was eroded by riverbank erosion from 25 August. Another section, measuring 160 feet long and 15 feet wide, collapsed on 17 September.
River-channel dredging, porcupine placement, geotextile installation, steel-wire flow-control measures, temporary embankment construction and sand filling are being carried out to prevent further erosion, with Tatmadaw members, Myanmar Police Force personnel, social organizations and residents working together.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and riverbank erosion on 30 July caused a breach beneath the Ngawun River embankment in Laymyethna Township, resulting in flooding in five wards and some villages in Laymyethna, as well as 15 wards and some villages in Hinthada, Yekyi, Ngathainggyoung, Kyonpyaw and Kyaunggon townships.
Geobags, sandbags and steel sheet piles are being used to reinforce weak sections of the Ngawun embankment. Volunteers are also clearing silt and debris, delivering food to flood victims, providing emergency healthcare and carrying out rehabilitation works in areas where floodwaters have receded.
