CARMAKERS belonging to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association plan to overhaul their factory work schedules from financial 2027, including reducing plant operations on national holidays, to better balance work and time with family.
In a bid to attract more workers, automakers will also review industry practices that include taking days off on weekdays during Japan’s Golden Week holiday period. The idea is to align with the country’s national calendar.
Major automakers including Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co have long operated factories on weekday national holidays while taking extended shutdowns during the Bon summer holiday period and the year-end and New Year holidays under an industry-specific calendar.
The current factory schedules have improved production efficiency by concentrating the days of operations and allowing equipment upgrades and maintenance during longer shutdowns.
