YANGON Region won the overall championship trophy at the 2026 Inter-State and Region Judo Championships after securing seven gold, two silver and two bronze medals for a total of 11 medals.
The final of the Mixed Team event and the prize-giving ceremony of the championship, held at Gymnasium C of Wunna Theikdhi Sports Complex in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning. In the Mixed Team event, teams competed in the men’s +63, -60 and -73-kilogramme classes and the women’s -73, -63 and +73-kilogramme classes.
In the knockout rounds, Ayeyawady Region defeated Kachin State, Kayin State defeated Rakhine State, Shan State defeated Nay Pyi Taw Council, Ayeyawady Region defeated Yangon Region, Mandalay Region defeated Kayah State, Nay Pyi Taw Council defeated Rakhine State, Kayah State defeated Yangon Region, Shan State defeated Kayin State, and Ayeyawady Region defeated Mandalay Region.
In the third-place matches, Mandalay Region defeated Nay Pyi Taw Council, while Kayin State defeated Kayah State. In the final, Shan State defeated Ayeyawady Region to claim the championship.
At the prize-giving ceremony, Ei Chit Su San of Yangon Region and Wai Lin Htwe of Ayeyawady Region received the Best Female Athlete and Best Male Athlete awards respectively.
In the women’s individual -42 kilogramme class, Ei Chit Su San of Yangon Region won gold, Kyi Lae Lae Tun of Shan State silver, Yoon Nadi San of Ayeyawady Region bronze and Khaung Nan of Kachin State joint bronze. In the women’s -52 kilogramme class, Hnin Wut Mon Lwin of Ayeyawady Region won gold, May Zin Phyo of Kachin State silver, Nan Sanda Oo of Kayin State bronze and Khin Thu Zar Aung of Shan State joint bronze.
In the men’s individual -42-kilogramme class, Wai Yan Lin of Yangon Region won gold, Min Thant Kyaw of Kayin State silver, Hein Htet Aung of Nay Pyi Taw bronze and Samuel Naw Zet Aung of Kachin State joint bronze. President of the Myanmar Judo Federation U Tun Tun and officials presented the trophies, individual medals and cash prizes.
In the men’s individual -50-kilogramme class, Khine Khant of Yangon Region won gold, Saw Lin Let Kyal Sin of Kayin State silver, Aung Ye Htwe of Mandalay Region bronze and Junior Khaung Lwam of Kachin State joint bronze. Director-General of the Department of Sports and Physical Education U Nyan Zaw Oo presented the individual medals and cash prizes.
In the team event, Shan State won first place, Ayeyawady Region second, Kayin State third and Mandalay Region joint third. Kachin State women’s team won the women’s championship trophy with four gold, two silver and two bronze medals, totalling eight medals. Deputy Minister for Sports U Nyi Nyi presented the medals, cash prizes and championship trophies.
Yangon Region also secured the men’s championship trophy with four gold, one silver and two bronze medals, totalling seven medals, and claimed the overall championship trophy with seven gold, two silver and two bronze medals, totalling 11 medals. Union Minister for Ethnic Affairs U Than Maung presented the championship trophies to the Yangon Region team.
The 2026 Inter-State and Region Judo Championships were held from 8 to 11 September at Gymnasium C of Wunna Theikdhi Sports Complex in Nay Pyi Taw, with the aim of promoting physical fitness among the people, producing a new generation of young judo athletes and further improving the standard of Myanmar judo. A total of 238 athletes from 15 men’s teams and 14 women’s teams from the states and regions competed in the four-day championships. — MNA/KZL
