THE Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation has announced that 25,200 acres in Langkho Township, Langkho District, Shan State, were designated as the “Namton Protected Public Forest” on 1 September 2026, under Subsection (e) of Section 6 of the Forest Law 2018.
The ministry designates protected public forests and forest reserves to ensure the sustainability of mountain ecosystems, strengthen environmental management, conserve biodiversity and water resources, and prevent the improper extraction of timber, poles, firewood and other forest products by local residents. The Namton Protected Public Forest will conserve various tree species, including teak, ironwood, Sal tree, Indian Laurel, oriental plane tree, climbing wattle, Burmese lacquer tree, Jujube or Chinese date, and big-leaf mahogany, while allowing residents to continue using forest products sustainably.
It will also protect wildlife species such as jungle cats, deer, mountain goats, rabbits, sambar deer and monkeys. The designation is also expected to improve the ecosystem, support the socioeconomic development of local residents and help mitigate climate change.
