UPGRADING works of the Yangon-Pyay railway serving DEMU trains are accelerating to improve commuter convenience, train schedule optimization, and train speeds, according to the Ministry of Transport.
Deputy Minister U Aung Myaing recently inspected the progress on site. Of the 161 mile railway line, 121 miles have been lifted and packed using four Automatic Levelling, Lining & Tamping Machines (ALLTM). The remaining 40 miles are slated for 100 per cent completion by 3 September.
Additionally, laying continuous welded rail is also underway to strengthen the track and provide a safer ride. The section spanning 37 miles from Danyingon to Phalon and 43 miles from Pyay to Zeegon were completed, totalling 80 miles. The remaining 68.5 miles, from Phalon to Zeegon, are targeted for completion in the 2026 2027 financial year.
At present, upgrading works continue on sections including Nattalin-Paungde, Thaegon-Sinmeeswe, Sinmeeswe-Hmawza, and Hmawza Junction-Pyay station. — TWA/KK
