NEPAL’S deadly glacier-triggered flood in the Himalaya-Karakoram-Hindukush (HKH) region is not a freak disaster. It is a warning that climate change is turning the region’s water tower into a source of systemic economic and security risk. The devastating flood triggered by a glacier collapse that struck the Himalayan region on Aug 26, 2026, severely impacted border areas in Nepal and China (Tibet region) resulting in massive casualties. This is more than a Nepalese tragedy. It is a warning to every government in South Asia.
For decades, the Hindu Kush-Himalaya has experienced glacial lake outburst floods, or Glofs. The 1985 Dig Tsho outburst in Nepal, the Bhutan catastrophe of Lugge Tsho flood in 1994 and the 2013 Kedarnath disaster in India demonstrate again how rapidly water, sediment and unstable mountain terrain can turn into mass death. But the danger is changing. A new ICIMOD report confirms that HKH glaciers are losing ice at double the rate since 2000.
For too long, however, South Asia has treated the mountains as scenery rather than infrastructure. That is a dangerous mistake. The HKH is often called the world’s Third Pole because it contains the largest concentration of snow and ice outside the Arctic and Antarctic. It is also Asia’s water tower: 10 major river systems originate here and their waters sustain roughly 1.9 billion people downstream.
The latest science shows that Himalayan glaciers are losing ice at roughly twice the rate observed around the beginning of this century. On current emissions pathways, the region could lose up to 80 per cent of its present glacier volume by 2100. Even if warming is held to 1.5 to two degrees Celsius, losses of 30-50pc are projected. The implications are profound. In the near term, more melting can mean more water and expanding glacial lakes. Later, as glaciers shrink, the same rivers may carry less meltwater. At the same time, unstable slopes, thawing permafrost, intense rainfall and changing snowfall can increase floods and landslides. The region is therefore moving towards a dangerous paradox: too much water when societies cannot absorb it, and too little when they desperately need it. The Nepal disaster offers a glimpse of the price.
Now look downstream. Pakistan’s repeated urban flooding provides another part of the same warning. Intense monsoon rainfall is increasingly colliding with cities built around drainage systems, land-use decisions and infrastructure designed for yesterday’s climate. Pakistani authorities have repeatedly warned of urban flooding in cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi and others as heavy rains intensify.
The lesson is uncomfortable: climate disasters are not produced by climate alone. They are produced when a changing hazard meets weak governance. South Asia therefore needs to stop treating climate adaptation as a collection of national projects. The rivers are regional. The glaciers are regional. The risks are regional. Governance must become regional too.
A practical starting point would be a Third Pole Risk Compact: a permanent system connecting glacier and lake monitoring, satellite data, hydrological forecasting, early-warning systems, hydropower operators and disaster-management agencies across the HKH. Artificial intelligence and increasingly cheap sensors could allow warnings to travel across borders in minutes rather than after a disaster has begun. That requires trust and data-sharing among countries that do not always agree on much else. It also requires climate finance to move beyond declarations and into monitoring stations, resilient infrastructure, community preparedness and transboundary early-warning systems. The political argument is equally simple. Business as usual is no longer a neutral cho-ice. It is a risk decision.
The warning from Nepal comes just weeks before governments gather in Antalya, Türkiye, for COP31. The conference must recognise that the Third Pole is not a remote environmental concern. It is central to Asia’s water security, food security, energy security and economic stability. A useful way to think about the HKH is as South Asia’s natural balance sheet. Its glaciers are assets. Its rivers are infrastructure. Its forests and wetlands are protective capital. When those assets are degraded, the losses eventually appear on national balance sheets.
The choice is now before South Asia’s leaders. They can continue governing as if tomorrow will resemble yesterday or prepare for the climate that is actually arriving. The glacier that collapsed in Nepal did not respect a border. Neither will the next flood, drought or water crisis. The Third Pole is warning us that the future will not unpack like the past. South Asia should listen before it has to pay an even bigger price.
