THE water level at the Ngamoeyeik Dam in Hlegu Township, Yangon Region, reached 107.10 feet, with water beginning to flow over the spillway by 0.10 foot (about 1.5 inches), according to the measurement taken at noon on 28 August.
Meteorologist U Win Naing noted that the Ngamoeyeik had previously experienced spillway overflows of up to 6.15 feet in 2007 and 6.10 feet in 2023. However, neither incident caused any damage to the structure of the dam or posed any danger to the lower-part areas.
Therefore, there is no need to worry at present, as the current overflow of 0.10 foot above the spillway is merely a normal overflow event.
The current rainfall of about 20 millimetres (moderate rain) is expected to continue in the dam’s catchment areas, and inflows into the dam may therefore continue to increase gradually. However, historical records indicate that flooding in Hlegu town has occurred only when the water level exceeded the spillway by more than seven feet.
