MYANMAR is stepping up maize exports to Thailand via the Tachilek trade post, the Commerce Ministry said. Corn from southern and eastern Shan State is shipped duty free under Form D certificates, with volumes climbing steadily since February.
Thailand extended its duty free maize import period to two months on 26 June 2026. Nonetheless, demand has been sluggish recently as some animal feed mills on the Thai side have temporarily suspended operations and warehouses are reportedly full.
Maize export volume via the Tachilek border trade post were registered at 92,653 tonnes in the 2022-2023 financial year, 157,644 tonnes in the 2023- 2024 financial year, 327,004 tonnes in the 2024-2025 financial year, 77,909 tonnes in the 2025-2026 financial year and 104,168 tonnes as of 10 July in the current season.
The tax free export period is set to end at the end of August. While traders are racing to ship corn before the deadline, high transport costs driven by fuel prices and difficult road conditions during the rainy season have prompted exporters and farmers to weigh profit margins, as per maize market sources. — ASH/KK
