THE Adachi Museum of Art in western Japan said on Tuesday its gardens topped a US magazine’s 2025 Japanese garden ranking, marking its 23rd straight year as No 1. For the list by “Sukiya Living Magazine: The Journal of Japanese Gardening”, garden experts from Japan and abroad rated gardens they visited on criteria including quality and harmony with buildings.

Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto placed second, while Yamamoto-tei in Tokyo ranked third. Founded in 1970 in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture, the Adachi Museum of Art is known for its collection of modern Japanese paintings by Taikan Yokoyama and others. Its gardens, which are tended to every day yearround by a group of dedicated gardeners, were created under the belief that “the garden is also a canvas.”
