Myanmar and Uzbekistan held discussions on 16 July at the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) to organize a bilateral business forum and forge trade links between the ASEAN and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) markets.
The coordination meeting focused on preparations for the bilateral business forum scheduled for August, as well as strategies to establish market connectivity between the CIS and ASEAN regions.
During the meeting, the two sides identified agriculture, food production, textiles, footwear, pharmaceuticals, electrical engineering, gemstones, chemicals, tourism, and education as sectors with strong potential for bilateral cooperation. They also discussed positioning Uzbekistan as a gateway for Myanmar businesses to access the CIS market. At the same time, Myanmar would serve as a gateway for Uzbek businesses seeking to enter the ASEAN market.
“We believe that Uzbekistan can serve as a mutually beneficial gateway to the CIS market, while Myanmar can provide a platform for Uzbek businesses to expand into the ASEAN market,” a representative of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan said.
Following the meeting, both sides agreed to strengthen direct business-to-business (B2B) linkages, promote cooperation among sector-specific business associations, and draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between their respective national chambers of commerce.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan also expressed its expectation that around 50 leading Myanmar companies and business leaders will participate in the business forum to be held in Uzbekistan in August. — ASH/TH
