MYANMAR and Laos are trusted neighbouring countries and good friends. The two countries have always maintained their long-standing friendly relations and will continue to preserve these traditionally close ties in the future.
During the State Visit, President U Min Aung Hlaing and the President of Laos held discussions at the Lao Presidential Palace, during which they openly exchanged views on enhancing cooperation between the two parliaments, promoting bilateral trade, facilitating commerce and the flow of goods, and strengthening people-to-people contacts between the two countries. They also discussed the development of cooperation in the defence, tourism, manufacturing, education, health, electricity and energy sectors, as well as improving the livelihoods of people in border areas and maintaining peace and stability along the border. In addition, they exchanged views on the eradication of online gambling activities, among other matters.
Myanmar and Lao PDR are neighbouring countries and also countries that joined ASEAN at the same time. At a time when some ASEAN member states are attempting to exert political pressure and coercion on Myanmar, Laos has consistently supported Myanmar as a neighbouring friendly ASEAN member state.
Myanmar and Lao PDR will establish relations as strategic partner countries, and in the future, cooperation between the two countries will be further strengthened beyond the current level. Following the meeting between the leaders of the two countries, officials exchanged and signed Memoranda of Understanding on tourism cooperation between Myanmar and Laos, as well as on establishing sister-city relations between Nay Pyi Taw, the capital of Myanmar, and Vientiane, the capital of Laos, in the presence of the two Presidents.
Myanmar and Lao PDR have maintained diplomatic relations for more than 70 years. In reality, the two countries have enjoyed friendly and cordial relations since ancient times. As neighbouring countries, the peoples of both sides are closely connected and share a strong sense of friendship without distinction. Efforts have been consistently made to strengthen bilateral relations, and they continue to maintain firm ties with unchanged goodwill to this day. Both countries have held elections and formed new governments around the same period. Therefore, new areas of cooperation between the two new governments can now be further expanded and developed.
The State Visit of the President of Myanmar to the Lao PDR will further enhance and strengthen existing bilateral relations. It will open a new chapter in friendship and cooperation between the two countries, enabling them to further expand and improve their relations across various sectors.
