China Kunming ASEAN Association has proposed to import Myanmar’s maize for the long term under the Business-to-Business Agreement, according to the Myanmar Consulate- General in Kunming City.

They showed willingness to enter into a B2B agreement to import the maize monthly and enquired about the price.

Quality requirements include sensory quality, sensory, compositional and hygiene indicators and packaging specifications. Kernels must be plump and free of fermentation, clumping, insect damage, and unusual odours or flavours. They need to meet the national standard GBA1353-2018 for maize grades, Class 1. Moisture content must be less than 14.5 per cent; bulk density must be greater than 720. Incomplete particle content needs to be less than four per cent. Mould contamination must be less than two per cent, and deoxynivalenol (ug/kg) are required to be less than 1,000. Other indicators include fatty acid value less than 65, impurities less than one, aflatoxin B1 less than 20, mould contamination rate less than 2, and Zearalenone (ZEN) less than 60.3. The Package must comply with the national packaging requirements for this type of cargo.

Maize is the second most crucial crop after rice in Myanmar. It is a potential cash crop. Maize is commonly grown in Shan State, Kayah State, Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay Region and Sagaing Region. Monsoon maize is cultivated in May and June, and the winter maize season is from October to November.

Maize is the essential raw material for the feed processing industry. Corn starch, corn oil and corn syrup are also processed. Furthermore, corn is also converted into ethanol as biofuel. This renewable fuel is utilized in vehicles.

Myanmar’s maize is highly in demand by Thailand, China, Vietnam and the Philippines due to its high quality. India and Bangladesh also purchase them through border trade points. Millions of tonnes of maize are exported to foreign countries, generating foreign income. This commercially valued crop can be easily grown. Systematic growing and producing methods can also boost the income of the growers, contributing to the State’s economy.

Myanmar shipped over two million tonnes of maize to foreign trade partners yearly. The maize is cultivated in Shan, Kachin, Kayah and Kayin states and Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway regions. Myanmar has three maize seasons – winter, summer and monsoon. Myanmar’s annual maize output is estimated at 2.5-3 million tonnes. — NN/KK
