The 2026-2027 academic year for basic education schools in Myanmar will officially begin on 1 June 2026. In preparation for the new school year, the Ministry of Education has already organized continuous training programmes to improve the teaching and management skills of teachers, principals, township education officers, and educational staff. These training courses are intended to strengthen the quality of education and ensure that schools are ready to provide effective learning opportunities for students across the country.
Myanmar’s basic education system has now entered the fourth year of implementing the new curriculum system from Kindergarten (KG) to Grade 12. The curriculum is designed to improve students’ intellectual development, practical skills, creativity, and critical thinking abilities. To support this education system, the government has been gradually upgrading school buildings and educational facilities according to annual budgets. In addition, the government has provided school furniture, textbooks, exercise books, uniforms for primary students, teaching aids, and school development funds. Health support programmes for schools have also been implemented to create a better learning environment for children.
The new education system places strong emphasis on student-centred learning methods. Lessons are taught through discussion, participation, and practical activities rather than simple memorization. The aim is to prepare young people for their future lives and careers by equipping them with essential life skills and personal abilities.

In this system, five important learning skills, known as the “5 C’s”, are emphasized. These are Collaboration and Group Work, Communication, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Creativity and Innovation, and Citizenship.
Through collaboration and group work, students learn how to cooperate with others, complete tasks together, and share ideas successfully. Communication skills help students develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities so that they can express themselves confidently and effectively. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills encourage students to analyze situations carefully, identify solutions, and make correct decisions. Creativity and innovation help students think beyond traditional limits and develop new ideas. Citizenship education teaches students to become responsible citizens who participate actively in society, respect justice, and contribute to peace and harmony in their communities.
To ensure that schools can reopen successfully and students can attend classes regularly, the Ministry of Education has also launched a nationwide school enrolment campaign. The school enrolment week has been designated from 25 to 31 May 2026, under the slogan: “Let All School-Age Children Enrol in School for the Continuous Development of the Nation”. Educational authorities from different regions are working hard to ensure that schools throughout the country can open smoothly on 1 June.
The development of a country depends greatly on the educational level of its citizens. There is a well-known saying: “Only when education rises can the nation progress”. Therefore, improving education from the foundation level is extremely important for national development. Basic education serves as the cornerstone of higher education, vocational training, and future careers. If a nation wants to become modern, peaceful, and prosperous, it must first ensure that its citizens receive quality education.
Education does not simply mean learning to read and write. According to the Myanmar Dictionary, education refers to “the wisdom and knowledge that enable a person to understand and analyze things correctly”. A person who receives education gains knowledge, skills, and the ability to think critically. Education allows people to distinguish between right and wrong, make wise decisions, and solve problems effectively. Educated people usually approach challenges with careful thinking and logical reasoning. As a result, they are more likely to achieve success and contribute positively to society.
On the other hand, people without education often lack opportunities to develop their thinking abilities and decision-making skills. Without proper education, they may become vulnerable to harmful influences, misinformation, and poor choices. Therefore, education is not only important for personal success but also essential for building a responsible and civilized society.
Parents have a very important role in the education of their children. Their responsibility is not limited to giving birth and providing food or shelter. Parents must guide their children to become disciplined, knowledgeable, and morally good individuals. They must encourage their children to attend school regularly and support them in their studies. Sending children to school on time is one of the most important duties of parents because education creates the foundation for a successful future.
To support families, the government has introduced a free education system in basic education schools. Textbooks, exercise books, writing materials, and other learning supplies are provided free of charge. Because of this support, children from both rich and poor families have equal opportunities to receive education. Students can attend school without worrying about school fees or educational expenses.
Throughout Myanmar’s history, education has always played a crucial role in national development. During the colonial period, the Myanmar people faced restrictions in accessing education because colonial rulers did not want local people to become educated and aware. However, patriotic Myanmar citizens established national schools to continue educating their people. Today, although the situation is different, there are still challenges that can negatively affect children’s education. False information, fear, instability, and destructive activities in some areas can discourage students from attending school. Therefore, parents, teachers, communities, and authorities must work together to protect children’s right to education and ensure that schools remain safe and accessible.
Education is like light that guides the younger generation toward a brighter future. Children are often compared to flowers that will bloom beautifully when they are nourished with knowledge and care. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve his or her dreams. When children receive education, they become valuable human resources for the nation. They can contribute to economic development, social harmony, scientific advancement, and national stability.
In sum, the success and development of a country depend largely on the education of its people. Basic education is the foundation upon which the future of a nation is built. Therefore, the government, teachers, parents, and society must cooperate to ensure that every school-age child has access to education. By enrolling children in school and supporting their learning, the nation can create an educated generation capable of leading the country toward peace, progress, and prosperity. Let all school-age children enrol in school and build a brighter future for themselves and for the nation.
