The data obtained from the census will serve as a roadmap for Myanmar’s long-term sustainable development plans and national objectives. In addition, Myanmar’s efforts in implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals will also be internationally recognized.
Population and housing census operations are large-scale activities that require high costs. In most countries around the world, censuses are conducted every 10 years, while in developed countries they are carried out every five years. Population census data are among the most essential statistical information used as a basis for policymaking, planning, and implementation of a country’s social, economic, and administrative affairs. The key demographic data required for these purposes can only be obtained through population and housing censuses.
The population and household census 2024 was successfully collected in October 2024. The Ministry of Immigration and Population has released the pilot population, the Union report on census, the summary report and the report on facts and figures of population and household census during the set periods step by step.
The ministry has continued the compilation of population and household census reports for Nay Pyi Taw and the respective regions and states. Priority was given to preparing reports for Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon Region, and Ayeyawady Region, where the census was conducted with 100 per cent coverage, as well as Bago Region, where the census was conducted with nearly full coverage. The Nay Pyi Taw report has already been released.
The report on Nay Pyi Taw includes not only demographic data of the capital but also comprehensive sections on migration, education, labour force, disability, housing, as well as birth and death statistics. These data reflect the current situation in the region, including ongoing population changes, urban and rural population distribution, education levels, employment and labour force conditions, migration patterns, and the living standards of the people.
The Nay Pyi Taw Census Report, providing analysis on literacy rates, education levels, and school dropout situations in Nay Pyi Taw, can be used in formulating the necessary plans in order to improve the education sector. In addition, data on the labour force, employment conditions, and unemployment rates can be utilized to promote the socioeconomic development of the people in Nay Pyi Taw through the effective use of census information. Myanmar, as a member country of ASEAN, produces reports that can contribute to both ASEAN statistical systems and international statistical frameworks. These published reports can support the country’s own data requirements as well as provide indicators for the national indicator framework.
