STARTING from 1 May, workers who would return to Myanmar will need to bring the Consulate-General’s approval from respective Myanmar embassies, said the Department of Labour on 28 April. It said that some new workers have tried to leave the country through illegal approaches by taking advantage of privileges allowed for workers on leave, so that they can skip some requirements, such as overseas training and medical tests, so the department has now made sure a safe migration for Myanmar workers, eliminating unwanted risks, including human trafficking cases, by practising a thorough verification.

To avoid delays through the verification process, returnees on leave will have to seek approval from the Consulate-General offices along with employer approval of leave, and those in countries where the Myanmar Consulate-General office does not exist will need to seek approval from the nearest country or city, starting from 1 May, it said. If the workplace stated in the work permit, visa, and the leave form differs from the OWIC, they will have to apply for a new OWIC when they arrive back in Myanmar, it said.

Along with approval from the respective Myanmar Embassy, returnees will have to apply for departure, and if they are found to have committed misconduct in the application for leave, they will be banned from departing for a specified period, and their names will be added to the blacklist, it added. For the permit to go back to work abroad, Myanmar workers will need to apply for departure five business days in advance, along with an application form and required documents. The Safe Migration publishes a daily list of eligible persons on its Telegram channel.
