US President Donald Trump and high-ranking officials of his administration were safely rushed out of an annual dinner of White House correspondents at a Washington hotel Saturday night following suspected gunshots at the venue.

Trump told a press conference that a suspected shooter apprehended at the scene was armed with “multiple weapons” before being stopped by Secret Service members at a security checkpoint.

Trump, still wearing a black tuxedo, said one officer was shot from close range by the male suspect, a California resident who is believed to have acted alone. He said the officer was protected by a “very good bulletproof vest.”

Before speaking to the press, Trump wrote on social media that it was “quite an evening” and praised law enforcement authorities for doing a “fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely”.

Kyodo News reporters who were attending the dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel also heard multiple apparent shots. The head of the White House Correspondents’ Association said no one was hurt and that the dinner, the first that Trump has attended as president, will be rescheduled.
