Classic game between Japan and Australia streamed on Netflix, surpassing the record for any anime, film or other sports programme for Japanese audiences, the company said Wednesday. Around 85 per cent watched the WBC games on TV, compared with about 38 per cent on smartphones or tablets, according to Netflix, which had exclusive streaming rights in Japan. The Japan-South Korea matchup, with 17.86 million viewers, was the second most-streamed game, followed by the Japan-Venezuela clash, which drew 17.26 million. Japan defeated Australia and South Korea but was eliminated in the quarterfinals after an 8-5 loss to Venezuela. Iwate, the hometown of Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, and Kumamoto, where Chicago White Sox left-handed hitter Munetaka Murakami hails from, saw a higher share of viewers than other prefectures in Japan, the company said.
