Just as various countries around the world have their own traditional cultures and unique customs, the country also has its own distinctive traditions. Myanmar is a nation rich in high-standard cultural heritage. With its own script, traditional culture, customs, traditions, and etiquette, Myanmar has preserved these values handed down from generation to generation by its ancestors.
In Myanmar, it is necessary to preserve and cherish the cultural heritage that reflects the traditions and national characteristics of society. Among today’s youth, foreign music, art, films, dances, clothing styles, and other cultural trends are spreading, which may undermine Myanmar’s traditional culture and national identity. Successive governments have consistently emphasized the preservation of Myanmar’s cultural heritage, as culture is an integral part of the nation’s society.
Since 1993, the Traditional Myanmar Cultural Performing Arts Competitions with participation of professional and amateur artistes from regions and states, as well as different levels of schools and universities — covering song, dance, music, and orchestral performance — have been held annually, with the 24th competition organized in 2023 and the 25th successfully held in 2024.
The State plans to hold the 26th Performing Arts Competitions in line with four objectives: to explore, preserve, and enhance Myanmar’s national prestige, integrity, and distinctive cultural heritage; to promote and exemplify the spirit of national solidarity and unity through Myanmar’s art; to transmit traditional performing arts to the younger generation; and to function as a national cultural and artistic institution contributing to the State’s socioeconomic development.
The knowledge and skills gained from the performing arts competitions help nurture and strengthen the national spirit and pride. Each ethnic group has long maintained its own script, cultural traditions, and artistic expressions. All ethnic communities have to preserve these literary, cultural, and traditional practices handed down through generations.
Therefore, the preservation and promotion of Myanmar’s traditional culture is a matter of great pride for the nation and its people. Protecting cultural heritage, knowledge, and arts is not only essential for maintaining these traditions but also represents a national duty shared by all citizens. Hence, all artistes are called upon to actively use their artistic skills and talents to ensure that the unique culture, arts, and national characteristics of the Myanmar people continue to thrive and flourish. They are to contribute through their artistry to sustaining these traditions for as long as the world endures, and to help instil a strong sense of national spirit and resilience in the younger generation.
