Nay Pyi Taw, August 25

As TNLA armed terrorists retreated in disarray after being unable to withstand the Tatmadaw’s (military) offensive, they viciously and senselessly planted mines and blew up the iconic and world-renowned Gokteik Viaduct on the morning of August 24.

The destruction damaged a 60-foot section of the steel truss and the abutment (AB-2) between Pier No. (P-16) and the abutment (AB-2) on the Kyaukme side of the bridge. This act serves as a practical demonstration of the low intellect and lack of morality of the TNLA armed terrorists and their allies.

Regarding this malicious act by the TNLA armed terrorists, who destroyed a non-military, historically significant, and iconic national landmark, the security forces will continue to carry out intense and decisive operations to completely eradicate the terrorists, amidst the condemnation and denunciation from the general public.

The Gokteik Viaduct has been historically famous across ages due to its advanced construction technology and beautiful natural surroundings. It is located on the Mandalay-Lashio railway line, connecting Nawngkhio Township and Kyaukme Town in Northern Shan State. It holds the distinction of being Myanmar’s highest bridge, the second-highest bridge in the world at one time, and the largest railway steel trestle in the world when it was completed, attracting numerous domestic and international tourists.

The Gokteik Viaduct’s construction began in 1899 and was completed in 1900, with its initial use starting in 1903. The railway bridge is 2,260 feet (689 meters) long, sits at an elevation of 1,100 feet (335 meters) above sea level, and is 125 years old. This landmark, which has been preserved by successive state governments and local residents and is listed as a world wonder, has now been severely damaged.

A news release states that the TNLA and its allied armed terrorists are now nearing their sunset, and the time has come for them to relinquish everything they have temporarily and forcibly seized. Security forces, with the cooperation of the entire public, will continue to carry out intense operations for the complete eradication of the terrorists.
