A team of Chinese experts is currently conducting earth­quake damage assessment operations in areas affected by the major earthquake in Man­dalay Region, according to the Chinese Embassy to Myanmar.

The Chinese expert team arrived in Myanmar on 16 April and is presently carrying out inspections and assessments of earthquake-related damag­es across various regions of the country. The team aims to provide Myanmar with vital scientific evidence to support earthquake recovery and dis­aster prevention and mitigation efforts.

It is understood that the team is focusing on locations such as Yangon, Bago, Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, and Sagaing, undertaking activities includ­ing lifeline engineering assess­ments, inspection of damaged structures, geological earth­quake hazard investigations, and damage assessments.

Based on their field inves­tigations, the team will verify the intensity and scale of the earthquake and offer recom­mendations for emergency measures and repairs to the damaged buildings.

The earthquake assess­ment and inspection team has been organized under the arrangement of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) and the Ministry of Emergency Management of the People’s Republic of China, with lead­ership from the China Earth­quake Administration (CEA). The team comprises 30 experts from organizations such as the China Earthquake Rescue Cen­tre, Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and the China Academy of Building Re­search (CABR). — ASH/KNN
