On International Women’s Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized the urgent need for actions to ensure equal rights, power, and opportunities for all women and girls.
Saima Wazed, Regional Director for WHO South-East Asia, highlighted this year’s theme, “For all women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment”, which aims to create a future where no one is left behind. She noted that 2025 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, a pivotal framework for advancing women’s rights globally.
Wazed stressed that the health and wellness of women are crucial for the growth and development of South-East Asia.
The WHO’s Regional Roadmap for Results and Resilience calls for increased investment in women and girls, addressing historical discrimination and societal challenges. Significant progress has been made, with a narrowing gender gap in labour force participation and a notable decline in maternal mortality rates.
However, challenges persist, particularly regarding physical and sexual violence, with nearly 40 per cent of women in the region experiencing such violence.
