The Akha National Day, first established in 1975 by the leaders of the Akha ethnic group, has been celebrated annually with unity by Akha communities. Over the years, this event has grown in significance and scale, culminating in its 50th anniversary. This milestone reflects the unity, stability, peace, and prosperity of the Arkha people.
The Akha ethnic group, one of over 130 national races in Myanmar, has coexisted with other national race groups, particularly in eastern Shan State, since the early 11th century AD. Their daily lives are guided by the teachings of the native kind of religion – Akhazangr or Akha Way – Buddhism, and Christianity, fostering cooperation and unity rooted in the Union spirit. These religions and traditions teach them to live peacefully in their regions and associate with other ethnic groups amicably.
They take pride in maintaining their clothing, culture, language, and traditional customs, just as they weave and wear their traditional garments. According to their beliefs, traditional customs, and rituals, the Akha people celebrate seasonally traditional festivals, where they joyfully participate alongside people of all ethnicities. It is a lovely activity for national races in Myanmar.
Akha people inhabit border areas adjacent to neighbouring countries such as China, Laos, and Thailand, playing a vital role in fostering goodwill and friendship between the peoples of these nations and their peoples. By ensuring border stability and promoting border trade and development, they contribute significantly to the progress and growth of the motherland on one hand.
As the Akha people have collaborated with and supported the government’s path, they have seen improvements in their socioeconomic lives. Therefore, it is crucial for the Akha people to maintain their cooperation with the government, ensuring regional stability and peace while fostering development across various socioeconomic sectors. They should continue to work towards enhancing the benefits for both their region and community.
The Akha people have played a crucial role in shaping the history of Myanmar, with their contributions marking significant milestones. It is essential for them to continue making valuable contributions to the State. Preserving and protecting their rich history, traditions, customs, and cultural heritage is vital. The Akha people must foster unity, promote pride in their heritage, and work collectively for the progress of their region. Their active participation is crucial to ensuring the continued growth and prosperity of both their community and the broader nation.
