ACCORDING to locals, some foreign tourists have been visiting Mount Popa via Bagan with great interest.
Hundreds of travellers visited Mount Popa this year on festivals and religious days, and an influx of foreign tourists was among these visits.
“This year, there has been a significant increase in the number of tourists to Mount Popa. Some travellers spent the night while hiking and some went on a day trip from Bagan. A lot of people who come to Bagan also visit Popa. Among them, we also see foreigners. When they visit Bagan, they come to Popa,” said a Popa resident.
There were five or six foreign tourists on some days for day trips, and locals were happy to welcome foreign tourists.
“This year, we saw as many as four, five or six foreign tourists on some days. We didn’t see many tourists in the past years. We are happy to see such visitors. It would be great if more people became aware of Popa through them,” he continued.
Trips to Mount Popa include tours of students from international schools, visits by young people fond of mountain climbing for overnight trips, day trips to Popa from Bagan pilgrims, and visits by some foreign tourists.
Mount Popa is located in the northernmost part of Myanmar’s central Yoma, on the Kyaukpadaung-Taungtha-Myingyan highway, about 11 miles northeast of Kyaukpadaung Township, NyaungU District, Mandalay Region. The Popa area has many peaks and hills, surrounded by more than 30 mountains, of which the highest is 4,981 feet.
